Gator Bites: Week of May 13th

posted May 23, 2019, 6:07 AM by David Willoughby

Good Evening Gators:

Another fun filled week at Sherratt!

Forest of Reading:   Thank you to Ms. Belford for organizing our Forest of Reading program this year.  Over 250,000 children have participated in the Ontario Library Association’s (OLA) annual Forest of Reading program and have helped to choose the best Canadian authors and illustrators of our time by reading the books and voting for their favourites.  The awards were presented at the Toronto Festival of Trees, a “rock star concert for authors” hosted at the Harbourfront Centre, which some of our intermediate students attended on Tuesday, and Juniors on Wednesday.

Junior Relay Day: On Thursday the junior relay team competed at Frank J Hayden S.S. in Burlington on a beautiful sunny day. The teams all ran a great race, passed the batons with perfection and had smiles on their faces while doing so! Way to go Gators! Thank you to Ms. Wheeler, and Ms. Dimitrovski and Ms. Northcott for joining our athletes on this adventure!

Junior Track and Field tryouts took place today.  The team will practice over the next few weeks to get ready for their Track and Field Meet on June 13th at Georgetown District H.S.

Junior & Intermediate Speeches:  Our Junior and Intermediate students have been working hard on their public speaking skills.  The Sam Sherratt Speaks competition was held in the gym today. Awards were given to the top speaker in each grade level.  Speakers and audience did a great job. Thank you to Ms. Dimitrovski for organizing this great opportunity for our students, and to Ms. Belford, Ms. Byrne and Mr. Kerschner for helping to judge.

Gauss Mathematics Contest:  This week some of our Grade 7 and 8 students participated in the University of Waterloo's Gauss Mathematics Contest. Students wrote a 25 question test on Wednesday morning, and our school winners were announced this afternoon. We are very proud of everyone who wrote, and recognize the outstanding achievements of the following students:

Grade 7 Overall Winner: Jason L

Distinction Awards: Vincent Y, Sang Ha B, Perrin H, and Imogen C

Grade 8 Overall Winner: Jashan K

Distinction Awards: Lucas R and Matthew D

Well done everyone!  Thank you to Ms. Byrne for organizing this great opportunity for our students.

Kindergarten Orientation: On Thursday evening we welcomed our new students who will be entering school for the first time in September into our FDK classes. Thank you to our FDK team, Ms. Brazeau, Ms. Turjuman, Ms. Hunt and Ms. Lowry who hosted a fun evening of activities for us to get to know our new students!

Also thank you to our resource teachers, Mrs. Belford, Mrs. Neate and Mrs. Fazakas, for supporting, as well as parents from our School Council who came out to share all the great things council has been doing and to encourage our new families to join in supporting our students and school.

We wish you all a safe and fun long weekend.  Please remember there is no school on Monday due to Victoria Day.
