Good Evening Gator Families!

It has been a fun filled week of learning and activities at Sam Sherratt. Some of our Grade 6 students attended HDSB Reads at MDHS on Wednesday where the author and illustrator of the book “When We Were Alone” presented to them on the topic of reconciliation and honouring our identities. They also learned about the thought process behind the many drafts that lead to a book and the collaboration between the text and illustrations. Literacy engagement is an important part Sam Sherratt and this week we saw the start of the “Potter Heads Book Club”, initiated by some of our junior students, based on their interest in reading Harry Potter books. Our Forest of Reading also continues during breaks throughout the week in the Learning Commons.

Our Grade 4 classes enjoyed enhancing their learning about pulleys and gears through hands on activities provided by Scientists in the Classroom on Thursday. Also on Thursday, we enjoyed another installment of our Lunch Break Jam Session series, this time featuring award winning saxophonist Carson Freeman. The students were completely engaged with his demonstrations on the flute, and how he could make his tenor saxophone laugh, growl, and whine. He even took requests! Stayed tuned for our next guest in the series, drummer Mark “Exploseph” Joseph. More information is coming soon.

Our after school Math Club has now begun and will be running Thursdays to support students in the junior grades in developing numeracy skills. Finally, our Senior boys and girls basketball teams are enjoying games and the cheering crowds on most Tuesdays and Thursday throughout the season.
