  • Gator Bites: Week of Sept 26, 2016
    Good Evening Sherratt Families!

It has been a wonderful start to the new year. As we are falling back into the routine of school, we would like to start something new! Rather than a once a month newsletter, we are moving toward a weekly update, Gator Bites! Each Friday we will send a short message via email with a short update, key messages and attachments for you to review.

Our grade 3-8 students were inspired to stay safe online when we had Dave and Blake from “My Life Online” share internet and Social Media safety with our students. We encourage families to have a discussion with their children around their postings on the internet and how to make wise choices to stay safe online!

    SCHOOL COUNCIL
Our School Council met this week and it was very nice to see some new faces! We are very lucky here at Sam Sherratt for a core group of devoted parents who volunteer each month to give back to Sherratt as a School Council member. A reminder to our community that our next council meeting (the first with our 2016-2017 Council) will be on October 3rd. All welcome!

    ENTRY/EXIT ROUTINES
Please ensure you are dropping off and picking up your child from our blacktop area. The front of our school is exclusively for buses in the AM and PM as we strive to get all 325 of our busing students home safely. Thank you for following this request to keep all our children safe.

    CASHLESS

A reminder that the best, securest and most effective way to pay for school trips, functions and activities is through Cashless. When money and cheques are received by the school it take hours of time to count and deposit the money; time and energy that could be allocated better for our children and their learning. Our staff should not be handling cash, rather payments in cash should be received directly to the office. This takes time out of the children's learning time when teachers have to come to the office to process money.

We urge all families who are able to use the Cashless program to transition to using this system exclusively. We will have representatives from HDSB Finance Department coming here for our Open House to support families in setting up this great payment system.

Please begin the transition to Cashless, it is the easiest, most secure and dependable way to pay for school activities!

Save the Date: Open House October 5th-- 5:30-7:30pm
Please plan to attend this open house to meet your child(ren)’s teacher, tour our renovated Learning Commons, see some community groups and reconnect with your community.

Come here for dinner! We have Scooters Catering cooking up a great BBQ on our blacktop. Families can purchase that night. (veggie and halal options will be available). A combo will be $7.00. More info to follow!

    In Partnership,

    Robert Iannuzzi
    Colleen Golightly
and the Staff of Sam Sherratt

Lunchroom Supervisors: We are currently seeking Lunchroom Supervisors for our supply list (possible permanent). If interested, you must have a current Police Check (less than 6 months old) with vulnerable sector screening. Please speak to Mrs. Palmer in the main office to complete an application.

    TECHNOLOGY AT SCHOOL
We are proud of the technology we have been able to secure here at Sherratt. All classrooms have WiFi, a data projector and speakers. We have multiple devices for student use. Our younger students use our iPads most frequently as the hands on apps support great learning for our youngest students. As our students mature, we begin the transition to Chromebooks and teach keyboarding skills and accessing the Google Drive for file storage and retrieval. In our later Intermediate years we are able to offer our Intermediate students greater access to coding and creation using laptops.

Transitioning from one device to another takes some time, we know how much our students enjoy using Ipads and transitioning away from them is difficult for some to understand. We scaffold our technology devices so learning from one device builds onto the next. If you are interested in knowing which devices you can support from home, please speak to your child's teacher and they can suggest which device would be most appropriate for the age and stage of your child.

A reminder that students are welcome to bring technology to use during instructional time with their teacher's permission. Bringing Technology from home has some risks including damage to the device. If you wish to allow your child to bring their technology to school please have a conversation with them about these risks. Students will not be permitted to use their technology during breaks.
